About Us

Bre Lonzo, a Joliet, IL resident, never knew that her trip to the ER three years ago would trigger her to start a new "no-salt" spices and seasonings brand, Jack Spice.

"I had routine bloodwork done to get a discount on my health insurance, when the nurse ordered me to the ER because my blood pressure was 190/114," she said.

"When I got to the ER, The nurse practitioner started going through possible symptoms with me: "Have you had blurred vision (check, occasionally), nausea (once or twice a week, lasting less than 5 minutes, check), getting winded going upstairs (hey lady, I live on a second-floor walkup. Who wouldn't get winded carrying up groceries? LOL, check!) and inactivity (did I mention I quit the gym when covid hit? check!)?"
Lonzo was given medication to get her blood pressure down. "They wouldn't let me leave the hospital until my blood pressure came down," she noted.

Watching her sodium intake and exercise were mantras that her new doctor ordered. "I love to cook and I love spices and seasonings, but that fake salt that they had on the market was horrible, so I made my own," she said, "I had to dress it up to make it palatable." Thus, Jack Spice was invented.

Nearly half of Americans, ages 20+, roughly 122 million people, suffer from high blood pressure, or hypertension, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

High blood pressure is a huge risk factor for heart disease and stroke. About 70% of Americans will have hypertension during their lifetime, and only 1 in 4 will have it under control.

One way to control blood pressure is by limiting salt intake. The dietary guideline for Americans is no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium per day. The recommendation for individuals with high blood pressure is even lower at 1,500 mg daily.

Reducing salt intake can help lower blood pressure by reducing the amount of fluid in the blood vessels, which in turn reduces the pressure on the walls of the arteries.

Lonzo has released about 20 no-salt spices and seasonings, with about 10 more in production. "All of my spices have no salt in them," she said. "Do you know that most people don't know that lemon pepper has salt in it? Mine doesn't."
